What these test pages can and cannot tell you

A printed test page is a visual diagnosis: you print a known pattern, then read the result with your own eyes against the guidance on the sheet. That is genuinely useful, because most print faults — banding, missing colours, misalignment, streaks — show up plainly on the right pattern. What a web page cannot do is read your printer back: it has no access to ink or toner levels, nozzle status, or firmware, so any tool claiming to report those from a browser is guessing. Everything here works the honest way round — the pattern reaches paper, you judge it, and the tool interprets what you report.

Which test to run for which symptom

Start from the symptom. Faded or missing colours, or thin white streaks running the length of the page, point to a nozzle check — a clogged nozzle drops a colour or leaves gaps in a solid block. Ghosting, doubled text, or colour fringing where black should be crisp points to an alignment test, which reveals whether the print head lands in the same place on each pass. A white margin where you expected edge-to-edge output is a job for the borderless test. Blotchy or uneven solid fills, or colours that look wrong overall, are best judged on a colour or density page. Running the matching pattern first saves you a cleaning cycle you may not need.

When to clean, and when cleaning is the wrong move

If a nozzle check shows gaps, one head-cleaning cycle from the printer menu is the right first step, followed by a fresh nozzle check to confirm it worked. Resist running cleaning cycles back to back: each one spends a surprising amount of ink flushing the heads, and three in a row can use more than a light print job. If two cleaning cycles do not restore a colour, the problem is more likely a genuinely empty cartridge, a dried-out head on a printer left unused for months, or a hardware fault — none of which more cleaning will fix. Inkjets left idle for weeks are the classic case; printing something in colour once a week does more to prevent clogs than any cleaning cycle cures them.

Why the printed colours never match the screen exactly

Your screen mixes light (RGB) and your printer mixes ink (CMYK), and the two gamuts do not overlap perfectly — some vivid screen colours simply cannot be reproduced in ink, and vice versa. On top of that, the driver, the paper, and even the room lighting change what you see. So treat these pages as tests of consistency and mechanics rather than of exact colour: they tell you whether a colour is missing, banded, or misaligned, not whether it is the precise shade you designed. For colour-critical work, your printer’s own built-in calibration print is the reference to trust.

Can a website really test my printer?

It can give you the test pattern and interpret what you see, but it cannot read the printer itself. A browser has no access to ink levels, nozzle status or firmware, so the honest model is: the page prints a known pattern, you look at the result, and the guidance explains what a given fault means. Any site claiming to read your ink levels from a web page is not telling the truth about what a browser can do.

How often should I run a nozzle check?

Only when you have a reason — faded output, a missing colour, or streaking — and once after any head cleaning to confirm it worked. There is no benefit to running one on a healthy printer. The more useful habit is to actually print in colour every week or two; inkjets clog from sitting idle far more than from use.

Do I need special paper for these tests?

Plain paper is fine for nozzle, alignment and density checks — you are looking at pattern integrity, not photo quality. Borderless and photo tests are the exception: those need photo paper in a supported size, because borderless printing and full colour saturation depend on paper the printer is designed to run edge-to-edge and to absorb heavy ink.

Will printing a full-page colour test use a lot of ink?

A dense, full-coverage colour or density page uses noticeably more ink than a page of text, so print it only when you need it. Nozzle and alignment patterns are far lighter. If you are diagnosing a clog, remember that repeated cleaning cycles use more ink than the tests themselves — so run the check, clean once, and check again rather than cleaning repeatedly on spec.
