How this test page works

Barcodes fail to scan when the bars are too thin, too light or bleeding together. This sheet’s fine-line and density targets show whether your printer holds the crisp, high-contrast detail scanning needs.

What the results mean

Bar crispness
Bars must stay separate and solid. Where fine lines merge, a dense barcode printed at that size will not scan.
Quiet zone
The blank margin either side of a symbol. Scanners use it to find the barcode's edges, and cropping it is one of the two most common reasons a printed code is refused.

Common problems and fixes

The barcode scans on screen but not on paper
Screens render at a size and contrast paper cannot match. The usual culprits are a narrowest bar below about 0.25 mm, ink spreading on absorbent paper so adjacent bars merge, or a quiet zone lost to a tight label layout. Print larger, on smoother stock, and keep the margins.
Bars look grey rather than black
A barcode needs true black on white, and a driver in economy or draft mode delivers a dithered grey that scanners read as low contrast. Turn off toner-save and draft quality, and if the printer is composing black from colour inks, force black-ink-only in the print dialogue.
The printed barcodes came out smaller than I set
Your print dialogue scaled the sheet. "Fit to page" and "Shrink oversized pages" resize it by a few percent to clear the unprintable margin, and every bar shrinks with it — a symbol that would have scanned at full size can fail at 96%. Set scaling to 100% or "Actual size" before judging whether a size is workable.

Frequently asked questions

My printed barcodes will not scan

Usually the bars are too fine for the printer, or too light. Print barcodes larger, ensure high contrast (true black on white), and let ink dry. This sheet shows the finest detail your printer can hold cleanly.

How small can I print a barcode?

The constraint is the width of the narrowest bar, not the overall size. Below roughly 0.25 mm, consumer scanners begin to struggle, and thermal and inkjet output degrades further as ink spreads. This sheet shows the finest line your own printer holds cleanly, which is a more useful number than any general rule.

Does the paper matter?

Considerably. Absorbent plain paper lets ink spread, thickening bars and closing the gaps between them, while a smooth or coated stock holds the edge. If a barcode fails at a size the fine-line targets suggest should work, the paper is the first thing to change.
