How this test page works
A full diagnostic sheet for Epson printers: colour bars, a grayscale wedge, solid CMYK blocks, multi-size text and alignment marks on one page. Epson inkjets use a Micro Piezo or PrecisionCore printhead that is built into the printer rather than into the cartridge, which shapes almost everything about how their faults behave. Print the sheet, judge each section against the guidance beside it, and the pattern of what is missing tells you whether you are looking at a clog, a cartridge or the head itself.
What the results mean
- The head is permanent
- Unlike cartridge-mounted designs, an Epson printhead stays with the printer. A new cartridge does not give you a new head, so a clog has to be cleared rather than replaced around.
- Gaps in a solid block
- The signature of blocked nozzles. On an Epson this is worth acting on promptly, because a head left dried out is a service job rather than a consumable.
- Visual only
- The page cannot read ink levels or nozzle state. Epson's own Nozzle Check print is the authoritative version and takes seconds.
Common problems and fixes
- The printer sat unused for months and now a colour is missing
- This is the characteristic Epson failure, and it is why their heads have a reputation. Because the head is permanent, ink drying in it cannot be fixed by a new cartridge. Run one Head Cleaning and a Nozzle Check, and repeat at most twice. The genuine preventive measure is printing something in colour every week or two, which does more than any cleaning cycle cures.
- Standard cleaning is not clearing the nozzles
- Epson provides Power Cleaning as a stronger cycle, and it uses a large quantity of ink — enough that Epson's own documentation limits how often it should be run. Treat it as a last resort before service, not as an escalation to try immediately, and check the maintenance box or waste ink pad status, since heavy cleaning fills it.
- An EcoTank shows full tanks but prints badly
- Tank level tells you nothing about the ink path. Air in the lines after refilling, or a partially blocked head, produces exactly this — plenty of ink visible and nothing reaching the paper. Check the ink tubes are primed and run a Nozzle Check rather than adding more ink, which will not help and eventually overfills.

Where is the nozzle check on an Epson printer?
Under Maintenance on the printer's panel on models that have one, and in Epson Printer Utility or Epson Scan's maintenance section on a connected computer. It prints a ladder pattern where every segment should be complete. Because the printer generates it directly, it is unaffected by your browser or driver colour handling and is the reference to trust.
Why do Epson clogs matter more than on other brands?
Because the printhead is part of the printer, not part of the cartridge. On a design where the head ships with each cartridge, a clog is solved by buying a cartridge. On an Epson there is nothing to swap — a head that has dried solid needs professional cleaning or replacement, and on lower-cost models that can approach the value of the printer.
How often should I print to avoid clogging?
Something in colour every week or two is the usual advice and it is genuinely effective, because the mechanism is ink drying in idle nozzles rather than wear. A printer used regularly rarely clogs; one left over a summer holiday frequently does. That single habit prevents more Epson faults than any maintenance routine resolves.
