How this test page works
Each question splits the problem in a way that eliminates a whole branch rather than working through a list. The most useful of them is whether the printer can print its own test page: a printer that can has working hardware and a working paper path, so everything remaining is between the application and the printer — which removes most of the usual advice in one answer. The paths end in a specific thing to check rather than a general suggestion, and where a printer is showing an error code the tree sends you to look it up, because a code names the fault far better than any general troubleshooting can.
What the results mean
- The self-test page
- Printed by the printer from its own menu with no computer involved. Whether it works separates a hardware fault from a driver or connection one.
- Jobs that queue and stay
- The computer has a printer configured and cannot deliver to it. On a network that is usually an address that changed; over USB it is usually the spooler.
- A repeating mark
- The distance between repeats identifies which roller carries the defect, because every roller in the path has a different circumference.
- An error code
- More useful than any general path. Look it up with the exact model before trying anything else.
Common problems and fixes
- It worked yesterday and not today
- On a network printer, check the address first — a printer on DHCP moves, and everything configured to reach it stops working at once.
- Cleaning cycles have not fixed the gaps
- Stop after two. Repeated cycles waste a great deal of ink and fill the waste counter, and a head that has not cleared in two cycles usually needs an overnight rest instead.
- Everything prints slightly off the page
- Paper size rather than a fault: A4 against Letter shifts every margin. Check the print dialogue against what is in the tray.

The most informative next step is to print the printer's own test page from its menu, with no computer involved. Why do my print jobs disappear from the queue?
A job that vanishes has been accepted and discarded, which is a driver or spooler problem rather than a connection one. Removing the printer from the computer and adding it again rebuilds the configuration, which is more reliable than reinstalling the driver over a broken setup.
How often should I run a printer cleaning cycle?
As rarely as possible. Each cycle uses a meaningful amount of ink and fills the waste counter that eventually stops the printer entirely. Run one, check the nozzle test, and if two have not cleared it, leave the printer overnight — a head that is drying rather than blocked frequently recovers on its own.
