What the results mean

Label registration
Content should sit centred within each label. Drift means the printer’s label size or gap setting is off.

Common problems and fixes

Content creeps further down the label with each one
The printer's idea of the label length is slightly wrong, so the error accumulates. Run its calibration routine so it re-learns the gap or black mark between labels, and check that the media type in the driver matches what is loaded — gap-sensing and black-mark media are detected differently.
Every other label is blank
The printer is treating two labels as one, which happens when the gap sensor is not seeing the divide. Clean the sensor, confirm the media is threaded so the gap passes over it, and recalibrate. On black-mark stock, check the marks are on the side the sensor reads.
The design is cut off at one edge
Either the label size in the software is larger than the physical label, or the printer has an unprintable margin the design ignores. Measure the label, set exactly that size in the application, and keep content a millimetre or two inside the edge — very few label printers print truly edge to edge.

Frequently asked questions

My labels print off-centre

The printer’s label dimensions or gap-sensor calibration is wrong. Run its label-calibration routine so it learns the label and gap size, then reprint this sheet to confirm.

Why does the same file print differently on two label printers?

Because label printers are far less standardised than office printers: dot pitch, unprintable margins and how the driver handles scaling all differ by model. A design that fits one to the millimetre often needs adjusting for another, which is why calibrating and printing this sheet on the actual printer is worth the two minutes.

Should I calibrate every time I change a roll?

Only when the media changes — a different label size, a different gap, or a switch between gap-sensing and black-mark stock. Reloading the same roll type needs nothing. Calibration is quick and harmless, so when a print goes wrong after a media change it is the first thing to try rather than the last.
