Line pairs at decreasing spacing show the finest detail your printer can resolve. Where the lines blur into grey, you have found its practical resolution limit.
What the results mean

- Distinct black-and-white lines mean the detail is resolved; where they merge to grey is the resolution limit.
Common problems and fixes
- Fine lines merge into grey much sooner than expected
- Check the driver before suspecting the hardware. Draft, economy and toner-save modes all reduce resolution substantially, and many printers default to them. Set the highest quality setting and reprint — the difference is usually dramatic, and it costs nothing to check first.
- Lines are resolved in one direction and not the other
- That is normal and worth understanding. Printers frequently have different addressable resolution along the head's travel than across the paper feed, so horizontal and vertical fine detail genuinely differ. A large asymmetry that was not there before, though, points at a feed problem rather than at the specification.
- The resolution limit moves between prints
- The quality setting is not being held. Many drivers revert to a default mode per job, or drop to draft automatically for large pages, and resolution is precisely what that changes — so the line pairs resolve to a different point each time. Set the highest quality explicitly for each print and confirm it before comparing two sheets.
Frequently asked questions
What resolution should I expect?
Most inkjets resolve fine detail well on plain paper but bleed slightly; laser printers hold finer lines. If even the coarser targets blur, suspect a dirty drum, low toner, or a resolution setting turned down.
Why does the resolution I see not match the specification?
Because the advertised figure describes ink dot placement, not resolvable detail. A printer that places 1200 dots per inch still cannot show two black lines separated by a gap of that size, because ink spreads on contact with paper. The line-pair targets measure what you can actually see, which is the number that matters.
How does paper affect the result?
Enormously on an inkjet, considerably less on a laser. Absorbent plain paper wicks ink sideways and closes fine gaps, while coated or photo stock holds the edge and can resolve noticeably finer detail. Running this test on both is the quickest way to see how much of the limit belongs to the printer and how much to the paper.
