Where this comes from
Two things are compared. Your browser reports the timezone your operating system is set to; Cloudflare’s edge reports the timezone registered for the address you appear to be connecting from. On a direct connection these agree. The network operator behind your address is also checked for the hallmarks of a data centre rather than a consumer line, because VPN exit servers live in data centres.
What the results mean
- Timezones agree
- Your device and your apparent location are in the same timezone, which is what a direct connection looks like.
- Timezones do not agree
- Your traffic is exiting somewhere other than where your device thinks it is. A VPN is the usual cause, but so is travelling with a device still set to home time.
- Network operator
- Consumer ISPs and data centres have recognisably different names. A hosting company in this field means your traffic is leaving through infrastructure, not a home line.
- No signals
- Nothing inconsistent was found. This is not the same as confirming you have no VPN — a well-configured one in your own country looks exactly like this.
Common problems and fixes
- My VPN is on but no signals appear
- That usually means the exit server is in your own country and on a network that does not look like a data centre. It can also mean the VPN is not carrying your browser’s traffic — check for split tunnelling, which commonly excludes browsers.
- Signals appear but I am not using a VPN
- Check the operator name. Corporate networks, mobile carriers and satellite providers route traffic through central infrastructure that looks identical to a VPN from outside. Travelling with your device on home time does the same.
Frequently asked questions
Can websites tell I am using a VPN?
They can see the same signals this page shows, and commercial services go further by keeping lists of known VPN address ranges. So some sites will identify it and some will not. Nothing on this page, or anywhere else, gives a definitive yes or no.
Does no signals mean I am safe?
No — and it is worth being clear about that. It means nothing inconsistent was found. If you are running a VPN specifically to hide your location, check that the exit country is one you intend, because a VPN exiting in your own country hides you from your ISP but not much else.
Is a timezone mismatch a leak?
It is an inconsistency rather than a leak — nothing private escaped. But it does tell an observant site that your stated location and your device disagree, which is a fingerprinting signal. Some VPN clients can set the browser timezone to match the exit server.
