What this cannot tell you

  • These are viewing-angle standards, not rules. SMPTE and THX describe how much of your field of view the picture should fill for cinema content; a room, a sofa and a person's preference all legitimately override them.
  • The pixel-visibility distance assumes 20/20 vision resolving one arcminute. Sharper eyes see structure closer than the figure says, and glasses that are out of date do the opposite.
  • Says nothing about picture quality. Contrast, brightness, upscaling and the quality of the source matter more than distance for anything that is not native resolution.
  • Room geometry is not considered. Seating position, height, glare and off-axis viewing angle all affect the result and none of them are in this calculation.

How this calculation works

The recommendations are angles, not distances. THX puts the maximum immersive field of view at 40 degrees and its optimum at 36; SMPTE's reference for cinema is a more conservative 30. The calculator converts the diagonal and aspect ratio into a physical width, then works out how far back each angle puts you. Alongside that it computes the distance at which this panel's own pixels become resolvable, using the same one-arcminute threshold as the density calculator. Where that distance is further away than the immersive one, the screen is bigger than its resolution supports at that seat — you would see the pixel structure before you got the full picture.

The nearest THX recommends. Closer than this and you are turning your head to follow action across the screen.
THX optimum (36°)
The distance THX considers ideal for a home cinema — immersive without demanding eye movement.
SMPTE reference (30°)
The conservative cinema standard, and usually the practical answer for a living room where the television is also on for news and daytime viewing.
Pixels visible nearer than
Where this resolution stops holding up at this size. Sitting nearer means seeing the pixel structure on native content — the argument for 4K on a large screen at close range.

Common problems and fixes

The recommendation seems much closer than my sofa
These are cinema immersion angles, not comfort limits. Sitting further back is fine — you simply get a smaller share of your field of view, which many people prefer for everyday viewing.
I cannot tell 4K from 1080p on my TV
Compare your seat with the pixel-visibility distance. Beyond it, the extra pixels are below what your eyes resolve, and the visible difference comes from HDR and contrast instead.
The screen feels overwhelming
You are inside the 40-degree angle. Move back toward the SMPTE distance — that is exactly the range difference the two standards describe.

Frequently asked questions

How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?

A 65-inch 16:9 screen is about 56.6 inches wide. THX's 40-degree maximum puts you around 6.5 feet away and its 36-degree optimum around 7.2 feet; the conservative SMPTE 30-degree reference is about 8.8 feet. Anywhere in that range works, with the closer end more cinematic and the further end easier for casual viewing.

Is a bigger TV always better?

Up to the point where your seat is inside the immersive angle, yes — screen size is the single biggest factor in how involving a picture feels. Past it you start turning your head, and if the screen is large enough relative to its resolution you also start seeing pixel structure. The calculator shows both limits, so you can pick the largest screen that still works from where you actually sit.

Do I need 4K at my viewing distance?

Compare your seating distance with the pixel-visibility figure for a 1080p panel of the same size. If you sit closer than that, 4K is a visible improvement on native content. If you sit further away, the resolution difference is below what your eyes resolve — and the picture improvements you will notice come from contrast, HDR and the quality of the source rather than the pixel count.
