How this processes your file
The browser asks which screen, window or tab to share and shows its own indicator for as long as it is being captured — permission you grant to the page, visibly, and revoke from that indicator. The stream is encoded to a video file in memory as it goes and handed to you as a download. There is no server involved at any point, which is the whole difference from the browser-based recorders that end at a subscription page: nothing to upload, nothing to process, and no watermark to remove.
What the results mean
- WebM
- The format browsers can encode. Plays natively in browsers and on the web; convert it if a video editor refuses it.
- Audio captured
- Whether any audio track arrived. Requesting it is not the same as getting it — the platform and your choice in the picker both decide.
- Size per second
- Roughly what a minute will cost. It scales with screen size and how much of the picture is moving.
- The browser indicator
- Shown for the whole recording, and stopping the share there ends the recording here too.
Common problems and fixes
- There is no sound in my recording
- Capturing system audio is a platform limitation. On Chrome you must also tick the share-audio box in the picker; on macOS it needs extra software; Firefox and Safari do not offer it.
- The file will not open in my editor
- Most editors want MP4. Convert the WebM once — browsers cannot produce MP4 reliably, which is why it is not offered as a choice here.
- The recording stopped by itself
- Something ended the share — the browser indicator, closing the shared window, or the tab being discarded under memory pressure. The recording up to that point is kept.
- The file is enormous
- Screen video compresses badly when a lot is moving. Record a window rather than a whole screen, and keep recordings short.
Frequently asked questions
Is this screen recorder really free with no watermark?
Yes, because there is nothing to pay for: the recording is made and encoded by your own browser and never goes anywhere. Watermarks and time limits exist on services that process your video on their servers, and there is no server here to charge for.
Can I record system audio?
It depends entirely on the platform. Chrome on Windows and Linux can capture tab or system audio if you tick the option in the sharing dialogue. macOS does not expose it to browsers without additional software, and Firefox and Safari do not offer it at all. Your own microphone is a separate capability and a separate permission.
Where is my recording stored?
In this tab, in memory, until you download it. Nothing is written anywhere else and nothing is uploaded — which also means that closing the page before downloading loses it for good.
