Double-Click Malfunction Test
Find out if your mouse is registering two clicks from a single press.
How this test works
You click a pad with normal single presses. The tool measures the gap between consecutive clicks, and flags any pair closer together than 70 milliseconds — faster than any human can double-click, and the signature of a micro-switch that has started to bounce. A healthy mouse produces one clean click per press.
What the results mean
- Suspected double-fires
- Single presses that registered as two clicks under 70 ms apart. Even one is worth noting; several means the switch is failing.
- Fastest gap
- The shortest interval between two recorded clicks. Well under 70 ms with single pressing is the tell-tale sign of chatter.
- Switch chatter
- A worn micro-switch bouncing on contact, sending two signals from one press. It gets worse over time and cannot be repaired for most mice.
Common problems and fixes
- It flags double-clicks but I feel like I clicked once
- That is exactly the fault this test finds — your finger pressed once and the switch fired twice. It is not you.
- A clean run but the problem still happens sometimes
- Chatter is often intermittent early on. Run the test longer, and try during the activities where it bothers you, like dragging files.

Why does my mouse double-click on its own?
The micro-switch under the button has worn out. Each press is supposed to make one clean electrical contact, but a worn switch bounces, sending two signals microseconds apart. It is the most common way a mouse fails, and it only gets worse.
Can I fix a double-clicking mouse?
Sometimes. Increasing the double-click tolerance in your OS settings masks mild cases. The switch itself can occasionally be cleaned or replaced if you are handy, but for most mice the effort is not worth it versus a replacement. If it is under warranty, chatter is a recognised fault.
