Each symbol narrows the fault to a stage of startup, which is more useful than it sounds: a Mac that draws the Apple logo has already passed its firmware checks and found a disk, so the problem is software, while a Mac that draws nothing at all has not got that far and the problem is almost certainly hardware. The one symbol with no route through software is the firmware padlock — a firmware password can only be removed by Apple with proof of purchase, and no tool resets it, whatever its marketing says.

Common problems and fixes
- The progress bar has been stuck for ages
- After a major update this is normal and can take an hour or more. Interrupting it is how a recoverable install becomes an unrecoverable one.
- Internet Recovery will not connect
- Captive-portal Wi-Fi does not work for it. Use wired Ethernet or a network that needs no sign-in page.
- I get a padlock and a passcode field
- That is a firmware password, not the login password. Apple can remove it with proof of purchase; nothing else can.
Frequently asked questions
What does the folder with a question mark mean?
The Mac searched for a startup disk and found none. Sometimes the boot disk selection has simply been lost, which holding Option at startup fixes; if no disk is listed at all, the drive or its connection has failed.
Why does the Apple logo appear but nothing loads?
Because firmware succeeded and the operating system did not. That narrows it to software or the disk — Recovery and a First Aid pass on the volume is the usual next step.
Can I remove a firmware password myself?
No. It is stored where the operating system cannot reach and is designed to survive a reinstall. Apple can clear it with proof of purchase and nothing else will.
