How this processes your file

The metadata segments are parsed in your browser and every recognised field is listed, split into two groups. Shooting settings — exposure, aperture, ISO, focal length, lens — describe how the photograph was taken and carry no privacy weight. Identifying fields describe who took it, when, where and with what. That split is why this exists alongside the metadata remover rather than duplicating it: the remover deliberately names only the four fields that matter for privacy, because a wall of lens-correction tags buries the line about GPS, and someone checking their exposure settings is badly served by that.

Exposure, aperture, ISO and focal length. How the photograph was taken.
Identifying fields
Camera owner, serial numbers, software, timestamps. Who took it and with what.
Location data
Coordinates in the file. Readable by anyone you send the photo to.

The overlooked field. A body or lens serial links every photo from that camera to one another.

Common problems and fixes

No metadata at all
Common, and usually not a fault. Most platforms strip EXIF on upload, so a photo saved from social media has none, and screenshots never had any.
The date is wrong
It is the camera's clock at the moment of capture. A camera with an unset clock stamps every photo from a default date.
I want to remove this
Use the metadata remover, which strips it and re-encodes the file in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this and the EXIF remover?

The remover names the four fields that matter for privacy and strips them; naming everything would bury the line about GPS under lens-correction tags. This lists everything, which is what you want when you are checking exposure settings rather than checking what you are about to leak.

Does uploading to social media remove EXIF?

Most platforms strip it, and you should not rely on that. Different platforms behave differently, some keep it in the original-size download, and the safe assumption is that a file you send carries whatever it carried when you saved it.

Why do serial numbers matter?

Because they link photographs to each other. A body serial identifies every image from that camera as coming from the same one, which is enough to connect otherwise anonymous sets of images.
